Officials work to improve park safety

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

Steubenville may be known for its murals, but city officials are working to make it known for its parks, too.

During the day, it's tough to tell, but at night, the lack of lighting in several parks is easy to see and it's catching the attention of city officials.

To brighten up the situation and improve park safety, the city hopes to install more lights, something many people are happy about.

"I don't see how you could go wrong with adding more lights to the parks. We are at the parks all the time. The kids love the playgrounds. With it getting darker earlier, I think it would be a good idea to have some lighting around the parks," Marci Beighley said.

"I think especially in Steubenville, there are not a lot of outlets for kids so the park is a place that parents tend to come to more often. If it's not safe, then they aren't going to want to come," Ana Sayre said.

Belleview Park and North End Park are both the focus of the project. Specific details are still a bit hazy, but plans are in place to advertise to contractors for bids.

Residents hope it will help cut back on some of the drug activity.

"I would hope so. I hope if people think they are going to be seen, that they would stay away and families would be more likely to come," Sayre said.

"They have put a lot of money into the parks so far, so you might as well make them a safe place to be instead of a place to avoid," said Beighley.

Officials said a lot of planning still needs to be done, but they are hopeful this will happen.
