STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

With the holidays right around the corner, two hometown heroes are working to make the season special for those in need.

Trooper Ed Weigand and dispatcher Diane Holubeck with Ohio State Highway Patrol are holding their annual toy drive for children who will be stuck spending the holidays in the hospital.

This is the 10th year the two have been collecting toys for the drive and it's all on their own time.

Weigand said each year, they help about 500 kids and their families who are stuck in Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.

During the week of Christmas, they deliver the toys to the hospital in a big truck, sometimes having to make two trips.

"The families of the children are really hurting for cash because of the medical bills and everything. They aren't allowed to use any of the money donations to actually buy toys at the hospital. They aren't allowed at all," Weigand said.

For that reason, he said they took it upon themselves to make a difference.

Weigand asks that all donations be unwrapped and in their original packaging. He says books, baby dolls, board games and even gift cards are being accepted.

If you wish to drop off a donation, you can do so 24 hours a day at the St. Clairsville post and during the day at the Steubenville post.
