OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —

Speed may have been a factor in a crash that killed a Brooke County man on Thursday, Ohio County Sheriff Pat Butler said.

Fred Johnson, 44, of Wellsburg, died in the crash on state Route 2 just north of the Pike Island Locks and Dam.

Officials said the crash happened around 4 p.m. when Johnson rear-ended another vehicle near Lilac Lane. That set off a chain of events that caused the man's vehicle to roll several times before he was thrown from his vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured. Butler said it appears excessive speed and failure to maintain control were “causative factors” in the crash.

Officials say Johnson was taken to OVMC, where he died from the injuries he suffered.
