Police increasing patrols for holiday weekend

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

Labor Day is not only the unofficial end of summer, but it is also one of Ohio State Highway Patrol's busiest weekends. Troopers said they will be hard to miss with everyone from the Wintersville post on patrol.

"Everybody's working; lots of overtime. Everybody's out working the road and enforcing traffic laws. Labor Day is one of our biggest weekends. Labor Day, Fourth of July and Memorial Day are our big holidays and we are out in force," Trooper Greg Mamula said.

Mamula said they will be watching closely for speeding and DUIs.

"People need to slow down and get a designated driver if (they) are going to drink," he said.

Not only will troopers be checking for the usual violations, but they have a new one on the books just going into effect Friday -- texting while driving. For anyone under 18, the violation is a primary offense meaning police can pull you over just for texting behind the wheel.

However, if you are 18 or older and caught, it's only a secondary offense. Troopers said it will be tough to enforce.

"It's not going to be easy. In fact, it's going to be very difficult to do. Unless they are doing it at an intersection or right next to you, it's going to be pretty difficult," Mamula said.

For the next six months, troopers will only be issuing warnings for texting behind the wheel.

Regardless, troopers just want to make sure everyone stays safe this holiday weekend.

"Slow down, wear your seat belt, take your time and don't drink and drive," said Mamula.
