BRILLIANT, Ohio —

A Wells Township police officer isĀ  in a local hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries after being hit by a car during an incident late Sunday night in Brilliant.

Officer J.J. Kamerer stopped when he saw two people sitting on a guardrail, assuming they may have needed help.

"He asked, 'What's going on? Is everything O.K.?' and the subjects replied that it was none of his concern," said Wells Township Capt. Sean Norman. "He threw a bottle at the officer and said, 'There's my ID,' and there were some expletives involved in that."

Norman said the officer ended up with two guys wanting to fight, and was engaged with both men for a few hundred feet up the road. The officer chased the men on Third Street in Brilliant, when a vehicle struck the officer and one of the men. Both were flown by medical helicopter from the scene.

"The officer has a serious leg injury and is being evaluated by medical personnel," said Norman.

NEWS9 has confirmed the suspect is at UPMC in Pittsburgh. The other man involved is being held in the Jefferson County Jail. A third man, 32-year old Barry Starcher, was arrested at the scene and is being held in the Jefferson County Jail with charges pending.
