WEIRTON, W.Va. —

What started out as a typical fundraising phone call for Weirton's lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police child safety booklet ending up becoming a little suspicious for one woman.

"He asked for money for the FOP fund that they call me every year for, and then he said, 'Have you read the paper about what happened'," the Weirton woman said, who wanted to remain unidentified.

The woman said the caller was referring to the Steubenville rape investigation.

"He then said the name of the school, (the alleged victim's) age and the grade she was in. I said, 'Oh my gosh' and then I said put me down for what I usually give then I hung up. And that was it," she said.

NEWS9 contacted Weirton police about the call and they were able to confirm that the FOP was making legitimate phone solicitations at the time, but said the man making the call, who is not affiliated with the FOP or Weirton police, went off script.

Weirton police also issued a statement which said, "Weirton police contacted the phone solicitation company and immediately suspended all activity due to the unauthorized and unethical solicitation tactics by their employee. It should be noted that the company is in no way affiliated with the Weirton police department."

The woman said she was not sure what the man's intention was, but that you can never be sure with the scams that go around now-a-days.

NEWS9 also spoke with Weirton Police Chief Bruce Marshall who said he will be looking into the case more to determine whether any legal action should be taken.
