STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

Several community members in Steubenville have set up a campsite to protest the investigation into two teenage athletes accused of rape.

The family and friends of one of the teens arrested in the investigation have set up right across from the Jefferson County Jail to show their support saying the two accused are innocent.

The father of one of the accused teens said he will be there day and night until the teens are released. He said the boys are being treated as if they are guilty before proven innocent and that investigators do not have enough hard evidence to hold them or prove their guilt.

Friends have written letters in support as well.

The teens have been behind bars for several weeks and will be there until their next court appearance, a probable cause hearing, scheduled for Oct. 12.

NEWS9 did try and speak with the supporters on camera, but they declined to make a comment at the advice of their lawyers.

They tell NEWS9 more and more people are expected to show up each day.

Police say the protesters are allowed to be where they are.
