School construction site causing problems for local residents

HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. —

The construction of a new school is upsetting some local residents in Hancock County.

Crews are currently building a new elementary school in Weirton and the site is a little too close to home for some.

Those who live along Preston Avenue aren't upset about the new school itself. Instead they are unhappy with the mess the construction is making in their neighborhood. On top of that, they do not agree with how school officials are responding to their concerns.

"We've just been very disappointed that they have not communicated with us. They're not willing to address some of the issues we have since it's right here on our back door," said resident Jim Rhodes.

Rhodes said they're having trouble reaching someone in command to voice their issues about the dust and noise levels.

The city says they are willing to help the residents, but they hold no authority over the matter.

"We just want to know, are they going to clean our homes, what are they going to do. I've had serious issues with my pool and no one will talk to me," Rhodes said.

Superintendent Sue Smith said they are relocating dirt on site, which is creating the dust and noise problem at hand. However, she said water trucks are on site to help minimize the dust levels.

Smith states that she is sorry for any inconvenience, but it is a big project that is important for the county.

"We're just hoping we can talk and find out what the future holds for us since we border this new school," said Rhodes.
