JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

A second mother has come forward claiming her daughter was raped.

The report was initially filed with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office on Monday claiming a 14-year-old was raped by several individuals in April.

That report was handed over to Steubenville Police since it is alleged to have happened within city limits.

Steubenville Police Chief Bill McCafferty said the mother and daughter also stopped into their department and filed a report on Monday.

McCafferty said the officer trained in juvenile rape cases was contacted. The detective met with the mom and daughter on Tuesday.

The chief also addressed other accusations being made against the department including one claiming that a detective told the mother of the child to go home because he had to go home to clean his gutters.

"As far as I'm concerned, this is being handled properly. Whatever you hear on unreliable news sources, I have no concern with, they are unreliable. It's just people talking. They can say whatever they want, but it's not how it happened," said McCafferty.

The chief said his comments were directed at Internet blogs that are citing that information.

He followed his statement saying a third party, and not the mother, had contacted police by phone and asked one of the detectives to set up an appointment so that they could give officers information they received through blogs.

He said that detective was heading home for the day and told them to call him to schedule an appointment, but he said that he would be cleaning his gutters when he got home, so if he missed the call, he told them to leave a message and he would get back to them.

NEWS9 contacted the mother in this case to get her side of the story.

She said that she is hoping people will come forward and give police information about who may be accused in this case.

As of Tuesday, there was no reported link to a current investigation involving two Steubenville High School athletes facing rape and kidnapping charges.
