Senior centers doubling as cooling centers during heat wave

By Adam Del Rosso

With all of the heat and humidity sweeping the Valley this week, several places are offering ways for people to cool down.

Senior centers are acting as cooling shelters for the elderly to escape the heat.

From bingo to cornhole, seniors can go to the Mingo Junction Senior Center to keep entertained and cool at the same time.

Health officials are also stressing that everyone stay hydrated with fluids low in sodium.

And if you must get the gardening or some yard work done, do it later in the evening, when the sun isn't as strong.

In addition, the Mingo Junction swimming pool has a daily program for seniors from 10 a.m. to noon.

"It's an outlet to help keep cool. It encourages participation. The hotter it is, the more the people come. You can tell by the turnout today," coordinator Ed Treglia said.

"You got no events, you sit at home. You sit in the chair. And what happens? You can't get out of that chair. And once you get into that position, it's tough. So that's why we have this and different activities at the senior center," Fred Pernick, assistant director of the Mingo Junction Senior Center, said.

There are similar programs at the Weirton and Brooke County senior centers, as well providing shelter from the heat.

The Mingo Junction Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Weirton Senior Center is open on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Brooke County Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
