CARROLLTON, Ohio —
A community in Carroll County is pulling together and rallying for a local student who might not get to walk with his graduating class.
Austin Fisher is a senior at Carrollton High School, and like many of his friends, is hoping to hear his name called at graduation. Unfortunately, he may not get that opportunity -- all because, he says, he has been taking care of his mom, Teresa.
"This is my third battle. It started in 2006. I had a re-occurrence in 2010 of breast cancer. This time is was stage 4," Teresa said.
Because Austin has been busy caring for his mom, he has missed out on class days. Enough days where the school banned him from prom, and now, they might not let him walk at graduation with his friends, despite keeping up with his schoolwork.
"He is getting up with me at night to help me and took me to some treatments. A lot of it is stress. He has two jobs to help out," said Teresa.
Now, the community is pulling together and getting involved.
"T-shirts have been made, petitions, just to no avail. This is a great community. They have been really supportive," Teresa said emotionally.
Austin said the decision to stay home and help his Mom was an easy one for him to make, and he said, "That's what any son should do for his mother."
He hopes school officials will change their minds so he can complete his 12 years of school like everyone else, but if they don't:
"I'll be the one able to sleep at night knowing I did the right thing," Austin said, adding that he would also be disappointed in the school.
Austin told us he is still allowed to receive his diploma.
We tried reaching school officials, but because it is spring break, they were not in the office or able to give us a comment. We will be sure to follow this story and give you all the details as they come, though.
