Switch flipped for annual Winter Festival of Lights

By Philip Stahl

WHEELING, W.Va. —

The Wheeling Park Commission has once again flipped the switch for the annual Winter Festival of Lights display throughout Oglebay Park.

New this year are three light displays, one called Leaping Frogs, the others are additions to the Carousel and Ferris Wheel displays, and the Dinosaur display.

"I think the most noticeable thing will be that all our displays are now LED bulbs. We launched this green imitative four years ago. We thought it would take five, but we completed it one year ahead of schedule," said Oglebay Marketing Director Caren Knoyer.

Millions of bulbs make up the 78 larger-than-life displays, not to mention the Music Extravaganza that plays at the Good Zoo.

"That was something we started a few years ago, and this year, it has been completely redone. New music, new lights, and I think it's better than before," said Knoyer.

The Winter Festival of Lights runs Nov. 9 through Jan. 6, 2013.

Hours are Sunday through Thursday 5 p.m. until 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays 5 p.m. until 11 p.m.

The Festival of Lights has received national attention, bringing people from all over, even former NBC Today weatherman Willard Scott, who flipped the switch back in 1986.
