FOLLANSBEE, W.Va. —

Police in Follansbee are asking for help after a spike in break-ins and thefts are prompting them to focus on a major crackdown effort.

Despite the dozens of security cameras installed across Follansbee, officials said the crimes continues to rise.

"[They are] taking loose change out of cars that are unlocked, vending machines, items that are left lying around such as copper and copper wire, things that they can make a quick buck with," Police Chief John Schwertfeger said.

He said the crimes are being committed by kids as well as adults.

"We believe it's either a dependency problem of some sort and you can't ignore the fact that the economy is the way it is," he said.

Schwertfeger said the criminals are focusing on homes, cars and businesses. The owner of the Skip and Go tells NEWS9 he even had to install bars over his doors and windows after several break-ins.

On Labor Day, surveillance video caught kids vandalizing the new Veterans Memorial Fountain at the park, something Tony Paesano hated to hear.

"I'm disappointed they would do that for no known reason," Paesano said. "Why would they disrespect the people, the veterans who gave their lives for our freedom? It doesn't make sense. We are hoping it won't happen again or they won't let it happen again."

"Video doesn't lie. It's the bottom line. So if you are willing to do it, be prepared cause we will take the evidence to court with us," Schwertfeger said.

Schwertfeger also said the cameras currently installed have been working so far and they plan on installing more.
