BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —
The initial 911 call came in just after 7 p.m. Saturday for a vehicle that went over a hillside.
That hill sits off of Reservoir Hill Road and sent the car falling about 100 feet. Because the terrain near the Belmont-Harrison county line is so rugged, even the rescue crews had a difficult time finding the accident.
"We arrived on scene, we could not actually get to the vehicle without 4-wheelers or a couple of pickup trucks, which we estimated was a mile, mile and a half off the road," Lafferty Fire Chief Larry Zalesny said.
Zalesny said his crews from Lafferty as well as Flushing and Hollway responded to the scene. Medical helicopters were called in as well but couldn't land because of the terrain, which used to be a stripping area for a coal company.
Especially at night, Zalesny said the trails can be dangerous.
"The problem with a lot of people riding these ATVs and trucks when they're out there on these trails, is they don’t realize that overnight the terrain can change, you don't know what you're going to run into," said Zalesny.
In addition to the man who was killed, the 9-1-1 caller said two others were injured, but they were not on the scene when crews arrived. Officials are looking for those individuals and sent a notice to local hospitals.
Because this all happened on private property close to the county line, Zalesny said he isn't sure who will be running the investigation.
"Because they're not sure who owns the property yet, but there's a lot of stuff they have to investigate,” Zalesny said.
Belmont County officials began the initial investigation before they turned it over to Harrison County. Zalesny said it is possible that they could turn it over to the state.
As for the name of the man killed, his identity has not yet been officially released.
