JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio

A group of volunteers along with members of the Steubenville Police Department drove around the streets of the city Tuesday night looking for people who might be in need of shelter in freezing temperatures.

"We looked around all of the alleyways, old abandoned buildings we could find and we didn't find anyone and we were really happy about that," said Lisa Ward.

Ward is the Community Support Program coordinator for Jefferson Behavioral Health.

Ward said they do the search annually, looking for those sheltered and unsheltered, and hand that number to the federal government in order to get funding for those in need locally.

"We said I guess we have a feeling of what it would be like in these cold conditions and to totally not have a roof over your head on a night like tonight," said Ward.

She added, "You know, what I think we've learned in the last couple of years, especially with our local economy, with the the nation's economic conditions, anybody, anyone of us can be one paycheck away from being homeless."
