Walmart announced Tuesday that it will be making some changes when it comes to hiring, starting this summer.

Officials pledged to hire 100,000 veterans over the next five years and they say it's not only a win for veterans, but a win for everyone.

Their plan is set to take place on Memorial Day of this year.

"Hiring a veteran can be one of the best business decisions you make. Veterans have a record of performance under pressure. I can think of no better group to lead in revitalizing our economy than those who have served in uniform. Through their service, veterans give us a land of freedom. When they return, it must be to a land of possibility," Walmart CEO and President Bill Simon said.

"I think it's great. It really is. These people deserve it," said shopper Robert Backel.

"They are the backbone of this country. They should be taken care of. They should be helped," Paul Valuska said.

Officials said the program is available to any honorably discharged veteran in his or her first 12 months off active duty. Those outside of 12 months will not be given priority, but will still be "highly valued candidates."

Everyone NEWS9 spoke with said the veterans deserve it, and more companies should follow suit.

"I think the country should do a lot more for the veterans. I think it's great. I think they should be priority in this country," Valuska said.

"They are putting their life on the line. That's more than a lot of people do. That's my opinion," said Backel.
