West Nile cases up nationally, quieter in Valley

By Adam Del Rosso

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

As the West Nile virus continues to plague the nation, it's being called one of the worst outbreaks in U.S. history, but in the Valley, it's a bit of a different story.

"Fortunately, we are not. Jefferson County and the city of Steubenville has not seen any cases of West Nile virus," Steubenville Director of Environmental Health Tony Pasquarella said.

The panhandle of West Virginia has not reported any cases, either.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two cases have been reported across the Mountain State, in Tyler and Kanawha counties, while 53 cases have been confirmed in Ohio -- one of which was fatal for a 76-year-old in Hamilton County, near Cincinnati.

Those numbers are expected to go down as we head into fall and winter.

"As soon as it gets colder, that eliminates the temperature range for the mosquito," Pasquarella said.

In the meantime, Pasquarella recommended still being on alert.

"It's good to wear long sleeves, long pants, shoes and socks. Wear insect repellant and follow the directions on the applicator," he said.

He also said it's important to make sure to not forget about your pets, either.

"Pets are susceptible. Animals are susceptible. Don't miss your visits with your vet. Go to your vet on your regularly scheduled visits," Pasquarella said.

Officials also recommend getting rid of any standing water around your house, such as gutters and unused flower pots, where mosquitoes like to breed.
