Wheeling Island Casino to reduce number of greyhound races

By Philip Stahl

WHEELING, W.Va.—

With casinos now opened in Pennsylvania and Ohio, Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack is feeling the pinch, and cutting back.

The state racing commission agreed to allow the casino to cut back from 115 races a week to 107.

"The state statue says we have to have racing in order to have gaming, so greyhound racing is not going away," said Casino General Manager Jim Simms.

Simms said that no jobs will be affected during the change, and that it is estimated to save the casino roughly $100,000 annually by scaling back.

"The majority of our revenue use to come from Pennsylvania, and with Ohio online with their casinos, there's no secret we have increased completion," said Simms.

The majority of revenue comes in with slot machines, and greyhound racing only contributing about 10 percent.

"We are now trying to find more unique ways for people to play the game, and we'll continue to offer the best product we can every day," said Simms.
