WLU coach assists in helping find missing Super Bowl ring's owner

By Philip Stahl

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. ---

West Liberty head football coach Roger Waialae has been coaching the game for quite some time.

But when he got a call about a lost Super Bowl ring last summer, he really didn't think much of it.

"Right around when we were starting football camp, I got a call from my cousin Ariella in Hawaii. She asked for my help. One of the parishioners at her church had found a ring in an inheritance box after her uncle had died," said Waialae.

"Well, I called the scout who usually stops by here to look at some players, and he said to call the front office and explain the story. So, I did and I called the lady and said, 'Just listen to this story, you're not going to believe this,' and I explained the story to her."

Waialae, who had no idea the ring had found its rightful owner, was shocked when seeing the story on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

It turned out the ring belonged to New York Jets center John Schmitt.

Schmitt was on Waikiki Beach in 1971; he went surfing and lost the ring in the ocean.

"The great-uncle was a lifeguard at Waikiki Beach and had been snorkeling one day after work and found the ring. And back in '71, they didn't have the communication devices we have now; he was just unable to contact them for some reason and never tried to sell it, pawn it or anything, because his goal was to try and return it to Mr. Schmitt."

The ring now is back on the finger of John Schmitt, and for Waialae, he says he would never have made the call if someone was trying to make money off of it.

Instead, he did it for the family who found the ring and just wanted to do a go
