Long-Standing Bridge To Be Torn Down

A bridge that connected Wheeling Island and Bridgeport, Ohio, for more then a century will finally be town down after more than a decade of standing unused.

West Virginia Division of Highways District 6 engineer Bob Whipp said the state is seeking bids to tear down the Bridgeport bridge, which was among the types of bridges that could be ordered from a catalog in the 1800s.

Whipp said the cost of razing the structure will likely be $200,000 at the most.

Work should start this fall.
