Low-cost spay-neuter clinic opening soon

By Philip Stahl

MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va.—

A low-cost, low-income spay-neuter clinic will soon be open to the public.

Dr. Alison Bertrum with the clinic told NEWS9 that the facility opened its doors April 12, but only to animals that are being adopted from the shelter.

“We will open to the public the first week of June,” she said.

Bertrum noted that the clinic is only for spaying and neutering and not a fully functional veterinarian hospital.

“We won’t be here for injured pets, to give shots or check things out. it’s simply for spaying and neutering,” said Bertrum.

The idea to build the lost-cost clinic came a year ago when shelter officials said something needed to be done with the overflowing pet population.

“We don’t just get animals from the county, we get them from all over,” said Bertrum.

A massive fundraiser was held to secure money to purchase a mobile home and build it on the property last year. Over $100,000 was raised to build the place.

“We now have brand new technology, a clean center and with this, we will be able to do up to 20 surgeries a day,” said Bertrum.

Bertrum said there is still some work that needs done in the basement, where they plan on adding a laundry room, storage room and break room.
