BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

A man charged with felonious assault after he allegedly struck a woman in the head with an ax on New Year's Eve in Belmont County has been released from jail on his own recognizance.

During a preliminary hearing, Dan Gay's defense requested that Gay be released. The prosecution did not object to that request.

Officials are still investigating the incident, which happened on Hendrysburg Freeport Road.

The victim was transported to a hospital after the incident.

Gay’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 29.
