Man arrested on felonious assault warrant in Steubenville

By Aly Cohen

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

A man was arrested on a felonious assault warrant after Steubenville police responded to what they described as an urgent call on Euclid Avenue.

Lamonte Whatley, 47, was arrested on Thursday night. Whatley was arraigned Friday morning and charged with felonious assault on a warrant.

He was wanted after allegedly beating a woman with a claw hammer and cutting her with a knife in late February, police said.

On Thursday, dispatchers received calls about Whatley being at the Euclid Avenue home.

"Dispatch received a call, actually two of them, from an unknown female stating that she was being held by Mr.Whatley at a specific address. Officers checked that address, got no response. Due to the serious nature of the call, they contacted the landlord to let them in to check the residence," Steubenville Police Chief Bill McCafferty said.

There, they found Whatley, and he was taken into custody and held on a $50,000 bond, McCafferty said.

Officials say it is unknown who actually made the call. When the police arrived at the scene and found a woman with Whatley, she said she had not been held against her will and did not call the police.

Whatley is being held on $100,000 bond and is scheduled to be back in court for his preliminary hearing, set for next week.
