Man in hospital after car plunges in river

BROOKE COUNY, W.Va. —

A man is recovering in a local hospital Sunday after his car plunged into the Ohio River in Brooke County.

It happened Saturday along the 27th Street area about 11:30 a.m. in Wellsburg.

Police said they found the 73-year-old man unconscious and his car halfway submerged in the water when they arrived at the scene.

Emergency crews performed CPR on him and later took him to the hospital.

NEWS9 spoke with the man's family, who said he was trapped in his car for 45 minutes before responders were able to reach him.
The man's daughter said her father most likely blacked out, and he is being evaluated for medical issues.

The family said he will be OK, and they are thankful he is alive.
