WELLS TOWNSHIP, Ohio —

One man is injured in a logging accident in Jefferson County.

According to emergency dispatch, the incident happened around 12:30 p.m. on Township 156, more commonly known as Chestnut Ridge, in Wells Township.

Police said a logging company employee was cutting down a tree when another tree fell and struck him on the head. The man was found unconscious, and it took crews 15 minutes to remove him from the scene, which was a few hundred yards down a steep hill.

Police said the man was wearing a hard hat at the time of the incident, and it may have prevented him from being instantly killed.

"He did have a hard hat on. It hit him in the side. It glanced off the side of his hat and broke the hard hat, and most of his trauma is on that side of the head," said Brilliant Fire Chief Don Hutchinson.

The man was transported by medical helicopter to UPMC Hospital in Pittsburgh. The man's name and his condition have not been disclosed at this time.
