BELMONT COUNTY, OHIO —

One man is in jail after authorities say he stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from a home in Belmont County then tried to sell it all.

Police say $18,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from a home on High Ridge Road near Bellaire last Friday.

Authorities say the suspect, Lawrence Henry, tried to sell that jewelry back to Z’s Jewelry in Martins Ferry the next morning.

A woman working at the shop at the time told NEWS9 that she was immediately suspicious when she saw Henry’s collection.

She called the Martins Ferry Police Department who started the initial investigation.

Police contacted a recent burglary victim in the area and she identified the jewelry as hers, but initially police found only a quarter of the pieces she was missing.

A short time later, investigators linked alleged theft to 36-year-old Henry.  Henry is currently in the Belmont County jail with bail set at $125,000.

Belmont County Sheriff Fred Thompson says the case isn’t over.

“In fact, I have a couple of deputies out at this time trying to recover some property, so if we can get that recovered there will probably be another arrest,” Thompson said.

Z’s Jewelry says this isn’t the first or the last time its business will come across a case like this and that it always cooperates with police. The business also installed security cameras for this very reason just three weeks ago.
