Man Killed After Running Into Interstate Traffic

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

A man who police said darted into the path of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 70 Monday night has died from his injuries at Wheeling Hospital.

Michael A. Williams, 50, of Springfield, Ohio, had been in a car with 45-year-old Melissa Hunter, also of Springfield, when Hunter called police to report an altercation.

Hunter pulled over to the side of the road near the intersection of the interstate and State Route 9 and waited for police to arrive.

St. Clairsville police responded to the call and that's when Williams ran, police said.

Ohio State Highway Patrol was called to help locate him. Troopers spotted him a short time later and attempted to make contact with him, but he darted into traffic, according to investigators. Williams was immediately struck by the truck, moving at highway speed.

Hunter was transported to Wheeling Hospital for the injuries she suffered in the altercation but was expected to be OK. She has since been released from the hospital.

Troopers said the case is being investigated as an intentional act and alcohol is believed to have been involved.
