Man Killed When Car, Tanker Truck Collide In Hancock County

NEAR NEWELL, W.Va. —

A man was killed in a Hancock County crash Wednesday evening.

Deputies said that John Hoffman, 77, was driving on State Route 2 between Newell and Chester when his vehicle crashed into the rear axle of a tanker truck. The truck was exiting a chemical complex at the time of the crash.

Hoffman, 77, was killed in the crash. Police said the truck driver was not injured.

The tanker truck was carrying hot wax. No hazardous materials leaked from the tanker truck, but fire crews treated the roads for any hazardous battery fluids that may have leaked from the car.

Both lanes of Route 2 in the area were closed for several hours while crews cleared the scene. Police late Wednesday were still interviewing witnesses and investigating the crash.
