Man pleads guilty to robbing two Steubenville businesses

By Alex Koscevic

A BP gas station and a Dollar General in Steubenville were both robbed in July, and Shane Young pleaded guilty to the crimes in Jefferson County court Monday.

According to Assistant Jefferson County Prosecutor Jeff Bruzzese, the robberies had to do with drugs.

"There are no accurate statistics on it, but I would say from my own personal experience, well over 80 to 90 percent of these types of crimes, especially the burglaries and the robberies, the root cause tends to be some type of drug addiction," Bruzzese said.

Young told Judge David Henderson a drug relapse led him to rob both of the businesses -- along with a relative. For all three of the incidents, Young said he obtained about $300.

"That's typical on what we see on burglaries and robberies," Bruzzese said. "A person may go in and rob a store or rob a person on the street. The defendant gets away with $15, $20, $25, $30 in some cases and ends up in prison for years and years."

Judge Henderson sentenced Young to a total of four years behind bars for the incidents.
