Man sentenced to 8 years on burglary charges

By Kate Davison

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

It's a case that started over a year ago, when police said 37-year-old Lawrence Henry burglarized over a dozen homes.

Henry previously pleaded guilty to 16 of 17 counts of burglary. During his sentencing Monday morning, Henry and his defense attorney Michelle Miller spoke about his history.

"He had an accident at work," Miller said.

Henry said a doctor prescribed him with oxycodone to deal with the pain, a drug he quickly became dependent on. Henry said he stole from innocent victims to feed his addiction.

“The final thing drugs took from me was my freedom, my self-respect and my dignity," Henry said.

But prosecutor Chris Berhalter didn’t buy Henry's story. Berhalter questioned his criminal history, well before Henry's accident on the job.

"There is drug possession, there are domestic violence arrests, I am curious as to what the excuse was throughout these 15 years," Berhalter said.

Berhalter then read letters written by some of the victims, who felt they had been robbed of their peace of mind.

"What's done is done and I can't take it back. I wish I could," Henry said.

Judge Jennifer Sargus handed down a sentence of eight years in prison.
