Man stabbed multiple times, Bellaire police search for assailant

BELLAIRE, Ohio —

Police in Belmont County are searching for the person who stabbed a man over the weekend.

According to Bellaire Police Chief Mike Kovalyk, a man is recovering from multiple stab wounds Sunday after police got a call from Belmont Community Hospital about a stabbing victim.

Kovalyk said officers got a call about the man being injured around 3 a.m. Saturday. According to the victim, he was stabbed in 4300 block of Franklin Street, Kovalyk said.

"We've had some activity up there before, and we're trying to follow up on any leads that we can," said Kovalyk.

Officers asked the victim for a description of the person who did this, Kovalyk said. But there's not much they can work with.

"He was very vague on the information on the suspect," said Kovalyk, explaining the assailant as a thin black man who was shirtless.

Some neighbors didn't want to talk on camera, and some said they are unaware of area crimes.

Police said they've been handling several crimes, not just stabbings around the city.

"The activity has increased. We're trying to stay on top of it the best way we can,” said Kovalyk. “A lot of people don't like to hear it, but our manpower, our resources are limited."

Despite those limited resources, police said they will not stop doing what they can to keep their community safe.

The victim was transported to Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling to treat his injuries, Kovalyk said.
