Manhunt Ends With Promise Of Cigarette

A high-speed chase spanning two states turned into a manhunt Thursday night.

Police said Jordan Laudermilt, 24, of Wheeling, was eventually coaxed from his hiding place in an industrial complex by the promise of a cigarette.

The incident started with a traffic stop in Benwood, but led to four different agencies surrounding the Wheeling plant with their guns drawn.

Benwood police said they spotted Laudermilt driving what they believe was a stolen car, but when the officer tried to pull him over, he sped off.

The chase crossed into Wheeling, into the industrial plant area near McColloch Street. Several other agencies joined the chase and got Laudermilt stopped near the Environmental Protection Services plant, but he took off on foot into the plant.

All workers were evacuated for their safety and officers surrounded the building and brought in K-9 units to search for Laudermilt. Police later found him hiding in a rolling mechanism on top of a garage door.

"When the suspect was arrested, he was actually speaking to his mother on a cellular telephone while he was in his hiding spot. That leads us to (the) suspicion that he may have been trying to coax his mother or someone else to the scene to help him escape," said West Virginia State Police Cpl. J.A. Laing.

Laing said Laudermilt told police he was fleeing because he was on parole and didn't want to go to jail.

Friday afternoon, a Marshall County judge set bond at $10,000 on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and fleeing. Laudermilt is also charged in Ohio County with fleeing and eluding police, driving on a revoked license and obstructing officers, among other charges.
