WEIRTON, W.Va. —
More than 250 people gathered near the Margaret Manson Weir Memorial Pool as part of a rally to save it.
The pool sits in the Marland Heights area of Weirton, and it has been closed since 2005. Weirton Park Board member Ed Bowman said the board would like to demolish all but the front of the structure and possibly use the site for an ice skating or roller skating rink. However, many residents disagree, and they attended the rally to voice their concerns.
"This is not something that anybody wants. Nobody really wants the pool demolished," said rally organizer Doug Jackson. "They want to restore it, and there are ways to do it... to have the pool back open for the citizens of Weirton and the Ohio Valley."
Residents in attendance also signed a petition, which they said will be presented at the Weirton City Council meeting Monday and the Weirton Park Board meeting Wednesday.
