Marland Heights Pool debate continues

WEIRTON, W.Va —

Dozens of Weirton residents showed up at Weirton's Park Board meeting Wednesday morning, voicing their opinions about what should be done with Marland Heights pool.

It's been closed since 2005, and the park board has been discussing a possible demolition of the pool. One option they've discussed is using the property for a skating rink for the area.

Resident Doug Jackson, the president of the Save Marland Heights Pool Association, said he is frustrated because the pool was used as a spook house for the community.

"There were pictures that were spray painted all over the park ... all over the inside. We have the devil, we have knives we have blood -- red paint -- thrown everywhere," said Jackson.

According to Jackson, that has increased the cost for potential buyers or for people who want to help restore the park. However, according to park board members, there is no funding available at this time for restoration to begin.

Jackson said the group has collected 1,500 signatures from people who want the pool restored. Many residents at the meeting voiced their concerns, stating that they do not want the pool replaced with a skating rink.

"My suggestion was, if you wanted to build a ice skating rink, why not put it in the parking lot? Leave the pool in tact," said one resident.

"Why do you want to just destroy something and tear it down to put something else up? I don't understand that. My thought process is, you keep structures that are nice. Sure, things are dilapidated and falling down, but this isn't a hindrance to anybody, because if it was, we wouldn't be in this shelter right now," said another resident.

A decision hasn't been made on the pool yet, and according to the park board, they will continue talking about the pool and what the best option is at the next meeting.
