MARTINS FERRY, Ohio --
According to the latest report from Belmont County 911 officials, Martins Ferry is at the top of the list for incidents and cases there have increased.
In 2011, the city had 7,199 incidents, which also includes traffic stops, compared to just more than 6,500 in 2010.
Martins Ferry Police Chief John McFarland said thefts in the city continue to rise.
"Anything from home burglaries, breaking and entering to just your ordinary petty thefts," McFarland said.
To solve just one theft case, he said it could take anywhere from a day to several months. And with the city's long line of burglary cases, recovering stolen property often proves challenging.
"I can't even being to tell you how many man hours have been put it," he said.
The chief added that he department is not only dedicated, but busy. Officials must prioritize cases sometimes "so the more important ones get more attention that your regular theft of a motor vehicle."
He said each case is ultimately followed up on and if someone commits a crime in the city, be prepared to serve time.
"You steal in Martins Ferry, you're going to jail," McFarland said.
While theft cases are up in the city, the chief said the level of violence has remained steady.
