Monroe County road closed indefinitely

By Alex Koscevic

State Route 556 in Monroe County was closed Tuesday afternoon, after Ohio Department of Transportation officials said the road is undrivable.

The area has seen about two inches more rain for the month than usual, and the ground is saturated, making road slips more frequent, according to ODOT.

State Route 556, which runs between Beallsville and Clarington, is used by about 4,000 people daily, according to ODOT.

Switzerland of Ohio Local School District Superintendent Larry Elliott said the closure affects one bus, and one family will now drive their child to a different bus stop a few miles away. He said that solution is temporary, and they will work out a better plan.

ODOT officials said work on State Route 556 should begin Jan. 1, 2013.
