Mother Charged With Manslaughter In Connection With Toddler's Death

Autopsy Under Way In Morgantown

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

A Belmont County woman has been charged in connection with the death of her 2-year-old daughter.

The investigation began early Sunday morning when the child was pronounced dead on arrival at Wheeling Hospital.

Erin Bell, 21, is charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection with the death of her daughter, Mylie. Bell was arrested Monday night at her apartment in the Wolfhurst section of Bridgeport.

An autopsy is under way but was incomplete as of Tuesday morning. Detectives said they had enough evidence to charge Bell and said more charges are possible.

"The small child had extensive bruising over a large portion of her body," Belmont County Sheriff Fred Thompson said. "The medical examiner feels that the cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head."

Belmont County Sheriff's Department Detective Ryan Allar said the case has been turned over to Belmont County Prosecutor Chris Berhalter. In addition, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and the Belmont County Sheriff's Office are investigating.

The Department of Job and Family Services was immediately called because the child had a sibling.

"We are ultimately responsible for the health, well-being and safety of that child," said Belmont County Job and Family Services Director Dwayne Pielich. "We took custody of that child and placed that child with other family members. There are no apparent visible signs that this child has been possibly harmed. He's doing very well."

Pielich said Job and Family Services had not been involved with the family before, and Thompson also told NEWS9 there have been no prior problems reported with the child's family.

"This is just a truly unfortunate situation, and we're confident that with our staff alongside law enforcement and prosecuting attorney's, they will uncover exactly what happened to this child." Pielich said.

Bell is being held in the Belmont County Jail with bail set at $20,000. The sheriff is asking anyone who knows the child or the family who may have noticed anything suspicious to contact the Sheriff's Office.
