MOUNDSVILLE, WV----
Phil Remke, Moundsville city councilman, said the last time the city had a comprehensive study, the steel mills were booming and Richard Nixon was President.
Remke said this is something the city prepare for and complete as soon as possible.
For the most part, the city of Moundsville has stayed intact downtown and city wide.
Local businesses occupy Jefferson Ave. and the population has stayed the same for the past decade.
Now, the city council is saying that they need to prepare for the potential boom in natural gas drilling.
To prepare for that, the city is planning to do a study of everything Moundsville has to offer.
“Knowing what we need, from infrastructure to housing. Just basically the overall view of a town and how to make it better,” Remke said.
Remke said changes are in the works and that this study will take time, but in the end, it will be worth it.
“This is approximately going to take a few years and its going to take all the citizens of Moundsville to participate and all the businesses also because there has got to be a lot of data collected,” he said.
One thing Remke said the city is lacking is apartment like housing.
He said, “A lot of things have changed in Moundsville. A lot of things more are going to change in Moundsville, in Marshall County with this gas well situation. Do we want to live in the past or do we want to live in the future? We are going to make this town great and vibrant again!”
Councilman Remke said the study will be done by West Virginia University Graduate Students.
He said they will be staying in Moundsville and basically living in the city for the time it takes to complete the study
