Mudslide Shuts Down Belmont County Road

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

Crews shut down County Road 32, also know as Kilgore Road between Bridgeport and Bellaire early Friday morning after a major mudslide, and crews said the worst of it may not be over yet.

Chuck Alvey said he heard noises in the middle of the night, and when he went outside to check it out, mud was sliding and trees were falling.

"I heard a big crash and that big tree fell down. It was all down on the road, going down my lane," said Alvey.

A guardrail kept some of it back, but couldn't withstand it all. Crews spent all day and night clearing the mess.

”They were here all day long with their equipment and took about 30 to 40 truckloads out of here,” said Alvey.

Road crews said the worst of it may still be on its way. There's more on top of the hill that they can't reach with their equipment that they say Mother Nature will most likely bring down. Until that happens the road will stay closed for safety.

In the meantime, residents are allowed to use the road but it will be shut down to regular traffic. County engineers said they aren't sure when it will be back open.
