MultiMillion-Dollar Construction Project Shuts Off Water

The west section of the village of Bellaire is without water as of late Thursday night, but the mayor said for good reason.

Crews are constructing the new, multimillion-dollar stretch of State Route 149. And Mayor Vince DiFabrizio said they're currently at the part of the project where they need to move an old water line that's in their way.

DiFabrizio said the water will be off on the west-end of town until noon, at the latest, on Friday.

But, DiFabrizio said, going without running water for a few hours is a small price to pay when it comes to building a better road that will last a lifetime.

DiFabrizio told NEWS9 when complete, the new section of SR 149 will replace the old SR 149. He said the old SR149 will then be used for local traffic only, and he said drivers will be much safer.

"The road has been slowly giving way for years and we've been having to patch it and repave it. Once this construction is done that road won't be nearly as busy, and that will be good for us and great for the people living there," DiFabrizio said.

NEWS9 talked with local residents, they said they agree. "I think it's going to be a good thing. I think it's going to keep traffic flowing through a lot faster. I think it's what we need," said one resident.

Other residents said it's a minor set back that they are prepared to handle.

"I'll have to have a tub drawn so I can get ready for work in the morning," said Barb Wojtowicz.

The construction of the new portion of SR 149 is set to last for about two years. The project is costing about $7,000,000 total, and is costing the village an estimated $200,000 over the next 15 years.
