Multiple water-line breaks create issues for East Liverpool residents

East Liverpool, OH —

Crews discovered there was a problem around 1 p.m. Monday and it wasn't too long before hundreds of calls started to roll in to the East Liverpool Board of Public Utilities.

"There was a couple of water breaks today. We don't know why but it dropped the pump out," said Bob Disch, director of utilities. "That caused the loss of water to a lot of people within a very short period of time."

Crews found the first problem under Lisbon Street, a break that took more than four hours to fix. But when they were finished, crews found out that they needed to head to Waterloo Street to fix a second. And then, they had to go to the pump line itself, near the water treatment plant, to fix a third.

Disch has worked with the city for 34 years and says this problem is different than any other he has faced.

"One water break in itself probably wouldn't have been a major occurrence, two was enough to throw the pump out at the plant," said Disch.

After crews finished finding all the breaks, they started to assess the damage. More than 1,500 homes had low water pressure or no water at all, which is about a third of their customers.

Crews are currently working to fix the break the pump line and Disch expects to have service restored by Tuesday morning.

Disch says some homes have had their service restored, but right now it is hard to put an exact number on how many.
