NAACP President Again Calls For Mayor's Resignation

MARTINS FERRY, Ohio —

The president of Steubenville's chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People returned to Martins Ferry City Council chambers Tuesday night.

Royal Mayo, president of the group, reiterated his call for Mayor Phil Wallace to resign after Wallace admitted he'd used a racial slur during a meeting last summer.

Wallace has since apologized and said he did not know he was being recorded.

During Tuesday's meeting, Mayo asked council members for their response to Wallace's remarks.

"I didn't get any clarity last time I was here," said Mayo. "I want to ask council members how they feel about the mayor. At this time, I don't feel like he's fit to judge people of color."

City Council President William Deaton said he is remaining "impartial," but added that he does not condone Wallace's comments.

Wallace then told council he met with members of the Ohio Valley Black Caucus on Monday, a meeting Wallace called "fruitful."

Caucus President Delores Wiggins told NEWS9 her group is still investigating.
