Nailers' signature goal horn silent; Fans blitz social media to express dissatisfaction

By Josh Eachus and  NEWS9

WHEELING, W.Va. —

Social media users were sounding off on Monday over something they didn't hear during the Wheeling Nailers preseason opener Sunday night at WesBanco Arena.

The Nailers scored nine goals against the Cincinnati Cyclones, but all nine times, the team's familiar horn didn't sound.

NEWS9's Josh Eachus asked Nailers fans to Tweet him their thoughts about the topic Tuesday on NEWS9 Midday. Several fans did so, making it clear that Nailers die-hard fans take pride in knowing that when the rubber hits the mesh, they've got one of the noisiest buildings in minor league hockey.

The 20-year tradition is now taking on a modern twist with the Twitter hashtag #savethegoalhorn. Other fans have said, "We've saved the team, we'll save the horn," and another went on to say he won't buy tickets until the horn is back.

"I've been to all kinds of hockey games, and yeah it's loud, but I mean, that's part of hockey. You go to see it. You're there to hear it," said Amanda Huntsman, of Wheeling.

People in Wheeling who NEWS9 spoke with said they can't see a reason why the team would do away with its signature sound.

"I have three kids, and I take them frequently to the games. They get pretty excited about it, and I think just everybody, all the fans, everything, you know, get up and cheer, and that's always been associated with scoring goals," Todd Heitz, of Rayland.

Soon after the #savethegoalhorn trend began, fans spilled onto the website Change.org, which is an online petition site. In less than 24 hours, the petition had 67 signatures.

And the active online fan base doesn't plan to stop with social media. Those who want the horn back are organizing with fliers, posters and continued media blitz to let the team know about the quest to #savethegoalhorn.

NEWS9 reached out to several Nailers front-office members, including Vice President of Business Operations Craig Bommer, who said, "With the changes and improvements being made to the arena, no final decisions have been made regarding the Nailers post-goal celebrations."

Bommer didn't say why the horn wasn't used Sunday night.
