Narrows work nears completion

By Philip Stahl

GLEN DALE, W.Va. —

The area of Route 2 known as the "Glen Dale Narrows" will soon be back open to four lanes, something that hasn't happened in years.

Since the southbound left lane started slipping down towards the riverbank years ago, crews closed that lane as a precaution.

In the meantime, state officials worked to get funding and figure out a plan to stabilize the hillside.

"We built a mile-long piling wall, and without a doubt, our goal has been fulfilled, and it looks like this is the answer.

We put piling walls in 36 different areas," said West Virginia Division of Highways Construction Engineer Gus Suwaid.

As construction equipment moves off the site, Suwaid said that crews will still have to install electrical poles for lighting. Once that is completed in the next few weeks, they will pave all four lanes of the 1-mile stretch.

"We have to rebuild, mill and stabilize the southbound left lane. One that is done, we'll pave it and then do the same for the other three lanes," said Suwaid.

The $6.6 million project started in March 2011. The project should be completed and all lanes reopened by the end of September.
