WHEELING, W. Va. —
A NASA astronaut visited Wheeling Thursday to share her experiences in space as part of a technology conference for women at Oglebay Park.
Keynote speaker Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger described challenges she faced in a field where women are a minority. She detailed her path from childhood to space to more than 100 people.
”It’s a chance to talk about NASA and what we're doing right now. It's very important, I think, that folks understand about our national laboratory," said Metcalf-Lindenburger.
The two-day event brought together people from all aspects of technology, including stem-cell research and education. Metcalf-Lindenburger told attendees she spent time at the International Space Station as part of a record setting mission.
"It was really exciting to listen to her speak about women in space. The flight that they were on, there were four women in space," said Joelle Connors-Ennis, an attendee. "They had set a record for that. It was the largest amount of women who were in orbit at that time."
As an astronaut, Metcalf-Lindenburger explained NASA's use of technology to help with events on Earth, such as natural disasters. She said a person has to be curious and needs mentors to make it in the technology field.
"I think that you need to always be asking the questions, ‘Why? How does it relate to me?’ and ‘How can I make it happen?’” said Metcalf-Lindenburger. "This has continuously been the dialogue in my life, and I think it is the dialogue in many people's minds. And just to hear from someone else to hear the relationships and the stories, it's very important."
The event continues Friday at the Wilson Lodge. Organizers said they hope bringing a NASA astronaut to the area encourages more women to explore the technology field.
