National Road Work Delayed

Crews are working up to six days a week but even with the extra effort; getting National Road in Wheeling open to regular traffic again will take more time.

"Currently, the completion of the bridge is our main priority. Once that is complete we will be able to open it to five lanes, said project manager, Mark Roberts.

Once its all said and done, 5 lanes of smooth-running traffic will keep people making their way in and out of National Road. The West Virginia Department of Highways says there are several problems causing the delay.

"Change in plans, utility relocation, are the main factors for the delay in the project, said Roberts.

In fact, it will be another few weeks before the barrels will be removed and National Road in Wheeling, WV. can reopen.

This latest delay comes as holiday traffic is just starting to pick up.

"It's been pretty hectic with all the one lane here and there, closing off and stuff like that. I can't wait till it's done, it will save me a lot of time, said driver, Matt Dunkle.

Some drivers say they've been keeping tabs on how long this project has gone on. Work started a year ago, and many say its the daily headache that's almost becoming the norm.

"I drive a truck down here everyday. It's a real pain in the butt but like I said, I said you gotta have it, that's progress, said driver Bill Curtin.

But for out-of-towners, the construction signs and detours can be very confusing as they try to learn their way around.

"I'll be excited for it to be done. We just moved here and it's a little confusing at first, said driver, Lynne McIntyre.

Mark your calendar, with good weather the new completion date now falls at the end of November.
