New Bill Targets Child Abusers

Brandon Plante is the 5-year-old boy Sen. Jason Wilson said is part of the inspiration behind a new bill seeking harsher punishments against child abusers.

Brandon Plante suffered severe injuries when he was only 5 months old, after his own father, Benjamin Plante, shook him causing excess fluid to build on Plante's brain.

Wilson tells NEWS9, for him, Brandon Plante's story is what solidified the need for stricter sentencing on child abusers, and he said the new bill hopes to meet that need.

NEWS9 talked with 5-year-old Brandon about the bill introduced in his name, and when NEWS9 crews asked the boy if he knew why the bill was created he said: "So Ben can't hurt me anymore."

In his own words, Brandon Plante spoke to NEWS9 about the abuse he suffered. He said he knows his father tried to kill him, and talked about the shunt now in his head that reminds him of his injuries.

"Anybody who would attempt or want to hurt a child should be punished to the fullest extent," Wilson said.

And Brandon Plante's grandmother and guardian, Carolyn Hoffman tells NEWS9 that while the bill is not going to be of much help now to Brandon Plante, it could help many children abused like him.

Wilson said he hopes to see the bill pass in January 2008.
