New Building For Cameron High School?

MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. —

Cameron High School was set to get a facelift, but NEWS9 has learned school officials may scratch that and get a whole new school.

Superintendent Fred Renzella said it's all because the current building may be beyond repair.

Renzella said he doesn't want to put $2 million into repairs, then have to do it all over again in a few years.

Plans for a new school would cost $20 million, and he said it won't cost the taxpayers a cent.

On the outside, Cameron High School might look fine, but a closer look will show the building coming apart -- you can fit a ruler through the cracks

The ceiling is cracking, wires hang from the walls because there’s no where to install them, and the building is not handicapped accessible.

They’re all reasons more than $2 million has been set aside for renovations, but now, Renzella said a facelift might not be such a good idea.

"When it's all said and done, we'll still be an old facility that does not meet current standards," said Renzella.

Renzella said the state school building authority agrees, and recommends they apply for a new building.

"With the management of our team and the fact that we are on schedule and under budget, I think that makes us eligible for [the state to] consider investing more money in Marshall County," said Renzella.

Cameron High School is already getting a brand new field house that will sit over by the football field -- and if a new school is on the horizon, they'll build it over there as well.

Renzella said the students need a new school and so does the community.

"The school in Cameron is the anchor of the community. Everybody supports the school because that's where all the children are," said Renzella.

The application will be sent in to the state in November. School officials will find out during spring of next year whether they're approved.

Renzella said there's already talk about what would be done with the old building.
