New Cameron High School on track to be completed this summer

MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. —

The new Cameron High School building is on schedule to open for the next school year. Crews said the project may be complete by the first week in July, thanks to mild weather.

The building is currently completely closed off -- windows and doors are in place and there's a roof over the New Age-looking structure.

On Monday, crews continued rearranging masses of earth on the exterior. But, in order to meet that July target date, there's still a lot of work to be done on the interior.

"The only thing that may go in later -- and I'm only talking five-10 days later -- would be the full-size gym," said Marshall County Schools Assistant Superintendent Wayne Simms.

Even so, a smaller gym will be ready to go, just in case.

"We've added things to the building to enhance the building, so just by doing that we're over budget but we're still within the budget guidelines we have set here in the county," Simms said.

Those additions include enhancements to classrooms, design changes to the interior and a greenhouse at the back of the building.

On Monday, crews were also pouring concrete curbs and hoping to get asphalt for paving very soon -- another task that would be aided by a stretch of warm, dry weather.

Officials said an early July opening will give staff roughly three weeks to move in prior to the first day for students on August 1. Any additional work beyond that would be minor touch-up work on the building.
