New Cameron school nears completion

By Philip Stahl

CAMERON, W.Va.—

The new Cameron High School is about 90 percent completeaccording to Marshall County Schools Assistant Superintendent Wayne Simms.

"There is definitely still a lot of work to complete, a lot of cleaning, but we have extra man power and a lot of crews working extra hours to get this job done," said Simms.

NEWS9 took a tour of the school today, and several classrooms are complete and just need furniture, others are getting touched up with electrical work.

"Pretty much the west end is finished, and they are working from that side and will finish on the east end by the gym," said Simms.

The project has received some heavy criticism from the school board and the public for it being a year late opening. The school was supposed to open to students in October 2011, but many weather issues slowed them down.

"This is it; around Dec. 18 they will be done. Everything on the outside is completed, the asphalt is down, the trees are planted, and the lines are stripped. We have to finish some floors, add carpeting, move in furniture and do some punch list items and then come January, these kids will be amazed," said Simms.

Cameron High School principal Jack Cain said that he will be working throughout the winter break to make sure all furniture and equipment is installed and ready to go. He says that students will be back from their holiday break and move into the new school around Jan. 3.
